How AJ Brenner Is Elevating B2B eCommerce for Industrial Distributors Through Digital Adoption and Customer-Centric Tools
B2B eCommerce continues to evolve, but for many manufacturers and distributors, the path to digital transformation remains complex. In this episode of The B2B eCommerce Show Podcast, host Justin King sits down with AJ Brenner, Director of eCommerce and Digital at ARG Industrial, to explore how industrial distributors can scale digital adoption and deliver meaningful customer value.
Brenner’s experience spans both B2C and B2B environments, but his focus today is clear. He is helping industrial distributors modernize their digital capabilities while keeping operations grounded in real-world customer needs.
From B2C Foundations to B2B Complexity
Brenner began his career building Shopify stores in college, gaining early exposure to B2C eCommerce. That experience provided a strong analytical foundation, but the transition to B2B required a shift in mindset.
“Moving from B2C to B2B is very different… B2B is customers that are at their day job purchasing from us and trying to really build an experience out that saves them time.”
Unlike B2C, where conversion metrics are often straightforward, B2B eCommerce requires a deeper understanding of workflows, urgency, and operational efficiency. Customers are not browsing casually. They are trying to complete tasks quickly to keep their own businesses running.
Driving Adoption Through Real Customer Value
One of Brenner’s most notable achievements was scaling digital revenue from a small percentage to a significant share of total sales. His approach was not centered on technology alone, but on delivering value through tools.
“Building tools that actually gave them value… it’s the service and it’s the tools that help them drive their business.”
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Brenner segmented customers into distinct groups based on size and operational complexity. Each segment received tailored digital capabilities aligned with their needs.
This aligns with broader industry trends toward personalization and composable commerce, where flexibility and customer-centric design drive adoption.
The Role of Internal Alignment in Digital Transformation
While many organizations focus heavily on external marketing, Brenner emphasizes internal enablement as the foundation of success.
“They can get used to a website with time and effort… really framing it kind of like a sales playbook.”
This includes structured training, consistent messaging, and empowering sales teams to confidently introduce digital tools to customers. Brenner’s strategy prioritizes internal adoption before scaling customer-facing initiatives.
As Justin King noted during the discussion:
“Two to 25 is a massive jump. What were some of the first things that you felt can improve adoption?”
The answer, consistently, was alignment between technology, people, and process.
Executive Buy-In as a Competitive Advantage
One of the defining factors in ARG Industrial’s progress is strong executive support. Brenner highlights how leadership alignment accelerates decision-making and removes barriers.
Instead of lengthy approval cycles, the organization focuses on execution and iteration. This allows the digital team to respond quickly to customer needs and market changes.
Measuring What Matters in B2B eCommerce
Brenner simplified reporting to focus on a few core metrics:
- Active customers ordering online
- New customer registrations
- Existing customer adoption
- Digital revenue percentage
This shift from data overload to actionable insights allows leadership to clearly track progress and identify opportunities.
The Future of Digital for Industrial Distributors
Industrial distribution has historically lagged behind other sectors in digital adoption, but that gap is closing. Brenner sees growing momentum as companies recognize the efficiency and scalability benefits of digital platforms.
He emphasizes that success is not about replacing traditional sales, but enhancing it with tools that improve speed, accuracy, and customer experience.
